White House Condemns Fox News over ‘Sickening Attack’ on Arab Americans

GUARDIAN US: Network urged to apologize to ‘every single viewer’ after host Jesse Watters seemed to advocate violence against Arab Americans

Fox News must apologize to its viewers, a White House spokesperson said, after the rightwing channel’s host Jesse Watters seemed to advocate violence against Arab Americans, amid heightened tensions over the Israel and Hamas war in Gaza.

On Wednesday evening, on the highly rated Fox show The Five, Watters said: “If you’re an Arab American in this country, and you rip down posters of Jewish hostages, American hostages, no. No, no, no. Someone is going to get punched in the face.”

In a statement sent to the Guardian, the White House deputy press secretary, Andrew Bates, called Watters’ remarks “unacceptable” and said: “Fox News owes an apology to every single viewer for this sickening attack on the rights and dignity of their fellow Americans.” » | Martin Pengelly in Washington | Thursday, November 2, 2023

Jewish Viewers Find a Refuge in Fox News

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The network’s unflinching support for Israel in its fight against Hamas has put the conservative network in the good graces of many Jews who see other coverage of Israel as biased.

“Fox and Friends” interviewed people at the Second Avenue Deli in Manhattan who were assembled early in the morning before the restaurant’s usual opening time to discuss the Israel-Hamas war. | Natalie Keyssar for The New York Times

Ross Abramson, a software engineer and recent New York University graduate, had a fairly conventional news diet until recently. He regularly checked his phone for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. And as a Jew with an interest in Israel, he would browse a handful of outlets like The Times of Israel.

Then the brutal Hamas-led attack on Israel happened on Oct. 7, and Mr. Abramson found himself turning to an outlet he said he didn’t rely on much before: Fox News.

“Did I watch it religiously before? No,” he said, adding that he found Fox’s reporting and commentary on Israel’s military campaign in Gaza “less antagonistic for sure” than that of other news organizations. “You don’t feel as attacked,” Mr. Abramson said.

Fox News, long a preferred source of news for the right, has lately become an information refuge for American Jews who believe that the mainstream media has been too hostile to Israel.

It’s somewhat of an improbable alliance. Jews overwhelmingly identify as Democrats. And as the Republican Party came to embrace a more populist brand of politics that vilifies “globalist” corporate interests and wealthy liberal businessmen like George Soros — something many see as coded antisemitism — Fox News hosts and guests promoted those views.

But more than any of the other major cable news channels — and perhaps more than any other major American media outlet — Fox News has wrapped itself in the Israeli flag in the weeks since the Hamas attack. Its coverage tends to emphasize the radical and antisemitic elements of the pro-Palestinian opposition, particularly on college campuses, while playing down the civilian casualties from Israeli strikes. » | Jeremy W. How Lachlan Murdoch Became the New Head of Fox and News Corp

THE GUARDIAN: Rupert Murdoch’s passing the crown to Lachlan comes as Fox News faces a difficult balancing act in the run-up to the 2024 election

Rupert Murdoch’s decision to hand the keys of his global media empire, including the role of chairman of both Fox Corp and News Corp, to his eldestson Lachlan brings to an end to years of speculation over his desired plan for succession.

Lachlan Murdoch, 52, now gains sole control of a media group that has reshaped the media landscape across continents and radically altered politics in the US. The move is the fulfillment of a promise first indicated in 2019, when the elder Murdoch named Lachlan as heir to his business.

“This is Lachlan’s best chance to prove to investors and his family that he is the best option for the future,” said David Folkenflik, NPR’s media correspondent and author of Murdoch’s World: The Last of the Old Media Empires. But he warned that it remained uncertain whether the successor could hold the empire together. » | Ed Pilkington and Dominic Rushe | Thursday, September 21, 2023

Trump Demands Fox News Stop Using 'Big Orange' Photo of Him

THE TELEGRAPH: Former president also asks why network refuses to show poll 'where I am beating Biden, by a lot'

Mr Trump accused Fox of 'purposely showing the absolutely worst pictures of me' | CREDIT: CNN

Donald Trump has hit out at his once beloved Fox News for using unflattering photos of him, including one of him looking “orange” and with his “chin pulled back”.

The former US president and 2024 candidate also accused the Right-wing cable network of failing to show polling data “where I am beating [Joe] Biden, by a lot”.

Mr Trump, 77, is known to be a regular viewer of the network’s flagship morning show, “Fox and Friends”.

Fox was one of Mr Trump’s biggest supporters in the US media during his presidency.

But his views on the network have soured since it took the lead in calling the crucial state of Arizona for Mr Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

On his Truth Social platform on Thursday he said: “Why doesn’t Fox and Friends show all of the polls where I am beating Biden, by a lot. They just won’t do it!

“Also, they purposely show the absolutely worst pictures of me, especially the big “orange” one with my chin pulled way back. » | Rozina Sabur, Deputy US Editor | Thursday, August 17, 2023

Donnie, FYI, they call it a double chin, not a “chin pulled back”. By the way, I hope you’re stocking up on your orange spray tan. I doubt that they’ll have that colour in the commissary. – Mark

THE GUARDIAN: Daily Mail report says construction workers ‘took the set, all the equipment, everything’ from Maine studio network built for him

As Tucker Carlson prepares to take his show to Twitter, workers from Fox News, the network which fired the primetime opinion host last month, have reportedly dismantled the home studio it built him in Maine.

“Fox came in last week and got all their shit out of there,” DailyMail.com quoted Patrick Feeney, who it said was managing work to rebuild the studio, as saying.

“They took the set and everything, all the equipment, the chairs, the desk, the fake walls, everything.”

Tucker Carlson Breaks Silence after Abrupt Departure from Fox News

THE GUARDIAN: Former Fox star did not address his reported firing but offered sweeping complaints about the state of American discourse

Tucker Carlson has broken his silence for the first time since his abrupt departure from Fox News, posting a video to Twitter that did not directly address his reported firing.

Carlson was one of the network’s biggest stars, and gained a large following while spouting xenophobic and racist rhetoric on his show, Tucker Carlson Tonight. He left Fox News without explanation on Monday. News outlets have reported that Carlson was fired on the personal order of Fox owner Rupert Murdoch for, among other things, using vulgar language to describe a female executive.

On Wednesday, Carlson shared a cryptic two-minute video on his Twitter account that did not explain his exit, but offered sweeping complaints about the state of American discourse. He said what he noticed “when you step away from the noise for a few days,” is how nice some people are. (With video) » | Kari Paul and agencies | Thursday, April 27, 2023
